It might not be Yorkshire Tea, but rhubarb has its own place in Yorkshire's history. Though we might complain about the cold and wet Yorkshire winters they provide perfect conditions to cultivate forced grown rhubarb. In 1877, the Whitcliffe family of Leeds seized the opportunity and established the first mass market commercial growing of rhubarb. This grew into the Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle, a 30 square mile triangle between Wakefield, Bradford and Leeds and the home to over 200 rhubarb growing businesses. The Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle once producing 90% of the world's forced grown rhubarb!

During World War Two, the demand for rhubarb dropped greatly as sugar was rationed making it difficult for people to balance rhubarb's signature tartness. And while the industry didn't fully recover, the Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle still covers 9 miles and Yorkshire still produces most of the rhubarb eaten in Britain today!

So, while it isn't Yorkshire Tea, Sweet Rhubarb tea still has strong roots in Yorkshire, not to mention Taylor's of Harrogate are the very people who make our beloved Yorkshire Tea!
