Leeds

Originally a market town on the River Aire, Leeds has developed to be the largest city in West Yorkshire. Becoming a centre for the textiles industry during the 16th century led to large economic growth allowing Leeds to challenge the supremacy of York in the woollen-manufacturing industry. Now the diversity of industry and shopping centres make Leeds an commercial centre in the north of England. Many historic buildings remain including the Town Hall (1858), a Victorian masterpiece The Corn Exchange (1864) and many buildings around the University district which still receive funding from the Clothworkers Company.
